I believe that the future direction of successful business will not come from one or two visionary strategists in a company, but by embedding the opportunity to try new things throughout the organisation. It is the role of leaders to put in place the environment where this can occur.

As an engineer I have immersed myself in technology from an early age as part of my personal and professional life. It was the opportunity to try new things that led me to electronics and then to an Engineering Doctorate in biometrics and machine learning. But I temper my love of the new with an impatience to see tangible value delivered.

I see myself as a critical friend trying to understand the value new technology can bring to business and society.  Involvement in technical theatre helped me learn that technology can be an art. Delivery of major government biometric systems helped teach me that technology could have real societal impact.



The technology industry is undergoing a phenomenal change, with the role of traditional, large incumbents becoming more uncertain. Responding to this change has been at the front of my mind for the last few years. To help address the declining value of traditional infrastructure managed services I led the product development of a next generation cloud management platform. More recently I’ve been championing inner-source as a way to help unlock value from across my organisation.

As a leader focussed on building new capabilities I feel the most important aspect of my role is to allow my teams to do what they believe is best for our customers and our company. I think it is this that leads to value creation. Too many of our systems and processes give us an illusion of having more control over success and failure than we have in reality. I try to challenge these unconscious biases in myself and others, to ensure that I create an environment where success can flourish.

It is vital to me that my work has purpose and delivers long-term value. Because of this at every stage in my career I’ve sought to create change and drive the development of new capabilities for my organisation. I do this through sharing knowledge, creating connections and challenging the innate biases that keep us doing things in the same old ways.

I also do this internally, helping to join the critical dots and enabling us to unlock value across organisational silos.

Vice President, Large System Integrator (London)

October 2014 - Present

In this role I own our global approach to advanced technologies and lead a global team team of senior professionals. I help customers achieve business value through the adoption of advanced technologies (specifically Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and Robotics).

  • Developed a team of business consultants who coach regional sales teams and customers
  • Created an offshore shared services team for  solution development, deployment and management
  • Implemented repeatable IoT solutions
  • Transformed Fujitsu’s engagement with industry analysts in IoT 
  • Influenced senior relationships (CxO) to win new digital projects and generating pull-through traditional IT revenue 
  • Established a company-wide community and portal to share best practice and information for delivery of advanced technologies

CTO - Application services, Large System Integrator (London and New York)

January 2013 - October 2014

In this role I set the global technical and offerings strategy for applications services.

  • Established new offerings in applications services 
  • Developed a next-generation cloud management platform leading a multi-national team 
  • Sponsored long-term research and development including an EU collaborative research programme
  • Created company messaging on application services, communicating the impact of emerging technologies to customers, media and analysts
  • Defined IT strategies and architectures working with customers, partners and internal sales and delivery teams
  • Accountable for lifecycle management and governance of application service offerings

Head of Biometrics, Large System Integrator (London and New York)

August 2007 - January 2013

In this role I was the company's leading expert in implementing large biometric systems and responsible specialist pre-sales and delivery support.

  • Secured large scale contracts leading multi-disciplinary bid teams
  • Delivered new biometric border and visa systems on-time and on-budget
  • Transformed the company's with several ministerial level customers leading to new contracts
  • Created international standards for biometrics and identity documents 
  • Established new relationships with specialist subcontractors
  • Developed the company's go-to-market strategy and messaging

Research Scientist, National Measurement Laboratory (London)

October 2006 - August 2007

In this role I provided expert advice to government and private sector clients on biometric technologies and testing. I served on the International Standards Organisations committees for biometrics and for identity documents.
